A narcissistic mother prioritizes her own needs, desires, and ego above her children. With a distorted sense of self-importance, she constantly seeks validation and admiration from others. She makes her children feel responsible for her emotions and uses them as a source of supply.

Children of narcissistic mothers often struggle with low self-esteem, never feeling good enough, and constantly seeking approval.

Her Son and Daughter

Narcissistic mothers typically treat their sons and daughters differently, often due to their own needs and perceptions.

Their daughters are frequently viewed as extensions of themselves, expected to mirror their achievements and uphold their image.

This can lead to intense pressures on daughters to conform to their mother’s expectations.

On the other hand, their sons are often seen as objects of support, particularly as they get older, with mothers demanding loyalty and assistance.

This dynamic can create a complex family environment where children struggle to establish their own identities independent of their mother’s influence.

The Scapegoat Child

The scapegoat child is one who is continuously criticized and blamed for the family’s problems, regardless of their actual responsibility.

Labeled as the “problem child” by their narcissistic parents, they are often devalued.

The scapegoat child may remind the narcissistic mother of everything she is not.

A narcissistic mother projects her own insecurities and self-loathing onto the scapegoat child.

The child will grow up blaming themselves.

The Golden Child

The golden child is the opposite of the scapegoat – they are praised and favored above all others.

They are seen as an extension of the narcissistic mother’s ego and often fulfill her unmet needs and desires.

They may resemble the narcissistic mother’s appearance and interests.

However, this praise comes with a price – pressure to maintain perfection and constant validation from their mother.

This can lead to difficulty forming their own identity and always seeking external validation.

The Invisible Child

The invisible child the mother can not see

The invisible child is often overlooked and neglected, as they do not fit into the narcissistic mother’s ideal image or serve a purpose for her.

They may feel unseen and unheard in their own family, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Invisible children may struggle with low self-worth and the belief that they are not important.

Personality Traits of a Narcissistic Mother

A mother with narcissistic personality disorder can cause great damage to her children, resulting in long-lasting effects into adulthood.

Some common traits of a narcissistic mother include:

Different Types of Narcissists

It’s important to note that not all narcissistic mothers exhibit the same narcissistic traits or have the same level of severity.

Some may be overtly controlling and abusive, while others may be more covert in their manipulation and neglect.

Source of Narcissistic Supply

Narcissistic mothers will use their children as a source of narcissistic supply.

Narcissistic supply is a term used to describe the constant need for attention, admiration, and validation that a narcissist craves.

For a narcissistic mother, her children are often the main source of this supply.

Her children will be responsible for her emotionally and will be dependent on for regulating her.

She expects you to enhance her image, express gratitude for her “parenting” efforts, and offer inappropriate support in her adult matters.

Will Not Apologize

She is unwilling to offer a genuine apology. When her faults are brought up, even respectfully and constructively, she tends to deflect, minimize, gaslight, shift blame, rage or resort to the silent treatment.

These toxic behaviors are a defense mechanism to protect her ego and regain control.

If you do receive an apology, it is often prompted by frustration or external pressure and tends to be cold, insincere, and invalidating.

Chooses Men Over You

Mother prioritizes men in her life

Narcissistic mothers often prioritize men over their children, putting the needs of their partners first.

This behavior can leave children feeling unworthy and insignificant, as the mother may even spitefully imply that they don’t matter.

While dating, she might neglect her children’s well-being, introducing multiple men to them and allowing these partners to move in quickly.

In situations where these men are toxic or inappropriate with the children, she might enable the man’s behavior, making excuses or denying any wrongdoing.

Jealous And Competes With You

Narcissistic mothers may feel jealous or envious of their children, especially if the child has achieved something that the mother never did.

This can lead to unhealthy competition, where the mother may try to one-up her child or sabotage their success.

The focus is always on herself and maintaining her image as perfect or superior.

She might allow her child to shine just enough to enhance her own image, but never so much that it makes her feel overshadowed or inferior.

Does Not Celebrate Your Successes

If you are not her golden child, or she feels she is losing control over you she will not celebrate your successes.

She may even sabotage your abilities to reach goals.

This is because any success of their child threatens their own self-image and sense of control.

But instead of being proud and happy for their child, they feel envious and resentful.

She wants you to feel she is better than you. This protects her false self.

Praise You When She Looks Good

She will praise you when you make her look good to others.

For example, she may boast about your achievements to her friends or family, but in private, she will criticize you.

This is a way for her to maintain the image of being a perfect mother while also keeping control over you through manipulation and gaslighting.

It’s important to recognize that this praise is not genuine and only serves to serve her own ego and self-image.

Continuously Criticizes You

On the other hand, narcissistic mothers may also constantly criticize their children in order to make them feel small and inferior.

They might nitpick at every little detail, from appearance to behavior, always finding fault or something that needs improvement.

This constant criticism can lead to low self-esteem and a constant need for validation from others.

It’s important to remember that these criticisms are not a reflection of your worth, but rather a projection of the mother’s own insecurities onto their child.

Blames You For Her Problems

Narcissistic mothers may also tend to blame their children for all of their problems and shortcomings.

They refuse to take responsibility for their actions and instead shift the blame onto someone else, typically their child.

This can cause immense feelings of guilt and shame in the child, as well as a distorted sense of reality where they believe they are responsible for everything wrong in their mother’s life.

Offers Conditional Love

A narcissistic mother’s love is often conditional on their child’s ability to meet their expectations and needs.

They may withdraw affection or attention when the child fails to fulfill these conditions, which can lead to a constant feeling of insecurity and fear of abandonment.

It’s important to recognize that this type of love is not healthy or genuine, and seek support from others who can offer unconditional love and acceptance.

Holds Grudges And Uses Guilt To Manipulate

Narcissistic mothers have a hard time forgiving and letting go of past mistakes or conflicts.

They hold onto grudges and use guilt as a tool to manipulate their children into doing what they want.

They may bring up past mistakes or wrongdoings as a form of punishment or to make the child feel guilty.

This can be emotionally exhausting for the child and create a toxic dynamic in the relationship.

Gaslighting And Denial

Gaslighting is a common tactic used by narcissistic mothers.

It involves manipulating someone into questioning their own reality and experiences.

A narcissistic mother may deny things she has said or done, making her child doubt their memories and feelings.

She may also twist situations to make herself look like the victim, further invalidating her child’s experiences.

Lack Of Boundaries And Privacy Invasion

Narcissistic mothers often have poor boundaries and may have a sense of entitlement to their child’s time, space, and belongings.

They can see their child as an extension of themselves and  therefore constantly invade their child’s privacy by going through their personal belongings, reading their journal or emails, and not respecting closed doors.

They may frequently cross boundaries by making demands or intruding on their children’s lives without asking for permission.

Always Needs To Be The Center Of Attention

Narcissistic mothers crave attention and need to be the center of it at all times.

They may interrupt conversations or events to redirect the focus onto themselves.

This constant need for attention can leave little room for their child’s needs or accomplishments.

It can also create a sense of competition within the family, with the mother always needing to be the best and most praised.

Unrealistic Expectations And Pressure To Succeed

Narcissistic mothers often have unrealistic expectations for their children.

They may push them to excel in areas they are not interested in or capable of, placing intense pressure on them to succeed.

This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and a constant need for approval from their mother.

Comparison To Others And Favoritism

In line with their need for attention and desire for perfection, narcissistic mothers often exhibit behaviors that can be detrimental to their children’s emotional well-being.

They tend to compare their child to others, setting unrealistic expectations and fostering competition among siblings.

Favoritism is frequently displayed, with one child being praised and placed on a pedestal while another may be criticized or overlooked.

This dynamic can lead to deep feelings of resentment and low self-esteem in the less favored child, as they struggle with a sense of inadequacy and a longing for the affection and approval that seems to come so easily to their sibling.

Over time, these experiences can profoundly impact the child’s self-worth and relationships, extending into their adult life.

Manipulation And Gaslighting

Narcissistic mothers may use manipulation and gaslighting techniques in order to maintain control over their child.

They may twist situations to make their child feel guilty or responsible for their own bad behavior, causing confusion and self-doubt in the child.

Emotional Neglect And Lack Of Empathy

One of the most damaging effects of having a narcissistic mother is emotional neglect and lack of empathy.

Narcissists are only concerned with their own needs and feelings, leaving little room for the emotions of others. This can leave children feeling unseen, unheard, and unloved by their own mother.

Children of narcissistic mothers may struggle with forming healthy relationships and trusting others due to this emotional neglect.

Physical Abuse And Neglect

Narcissistic mothers may also exhibit physical abuse and neglect towards their children.

This narcissistic abuse can be ina form of physical violence or neglecting basic needs such as food, shelter, and medical care.

This can severely impact a child’s physical and emotional well-being, leading to long-term effects on their mental health.

Enablers of Narcissists

In some cases, the other parent or family members may enable the narcissistic mother, either by turning a blind eye to their behavior or actively supporting and reinforcing it.

Narcissists typically surround themselves with people they can control and enablers.

This can further harm the child’s well-being as they may feel isolated and unsupported within their own family.

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day with a narcissistic mother during childhood often feels like an effort to demonstrate your love in hopes of receiving affection in return.

As you grow older, this day might trigger feelings of anxiety, guilt, and grief.

Narcissistic mothers tend not to behave well during special occasions or holidays.

You may find yourself walking on eggshells, striving to avoid upsetting her or triggering a narcissistic outburst.

Healthy Coping Mechanisms

It’s important for individuals who have experienced this type of narcissistic parent to seek therapy and support in order to heal from the trauma and learn healthy coping mechanisms.
